The School of Computing and Mathematics held its Annual Prize Lunch on Friday 13 February.  The event was an opportunity to recognise the success of students within the School who have excelled in their studies at the very highest level.  Many of the students attending were presented with prizes and awards sponsored by local  companies and therefore offers an excellent networking opportunity for both the students and the companies involved.

The Head of School, Professor Paul Hanna, welcomed everyone to the event and thanked the companies present for their sponsorship of the prizes as well as their wider input to the curriculum through, for example, delivering guest lectures, input to the curriculum through membership of the Industrial Liaison Panel and support for students in relation to preparing them for assessment centres and interviews.  He also outlined recent developments within the School, highlighting that despite anticipated cuts in budgets, the University had no plans to reduce the number of students studying computing and mathematics courses.  He went on to highlight the positive work of the School in encouraging more young people to consider careers in both subjects through engagements with secondary schools and other organisations such as the Boy’s Brigade.

Following these introductory remarks, the success of each student present was highlighted and the prizes and awards were presented and this was followed by an informal celebratory lunch where the students and the company representatives were able to discuss future career plans.
